Would You Buy a Tweet?
How exactly do you “buy” a tweet? The tweet is turned into an NFT, or “non-fungible token.”
No, by non-fungible I’m not talking about something mushroom related. An NFT allows you to buy and collect signed digital art, music, and yes, even tweets!
Ok, it’s not actually signed by a human like a signed album or headshot. It’s verified for it’s authenticity through crypto, meaning it’s in limited edition (usually one of a kind!) and there are no fakes.
The platform that’s selling Tweets as NFTs is Valuables, an auction platform where you can bid for any tweet by any user. Of course, you’re more likely to get a response after bidding from tweeters who are already signed up on the platform to sell.
I signed on the platform to check out it actually works. I was up and running as both a buyer or seller in less than 3 minutes.
Step 1: Head to Valuables by clicking on the link: https://v.cent.co/tweet/243056532332376064
Step 2: Click the circle in the top right corner and select “Setup”
Step 3: Login with your twitter to connect the platform.
Step 4: Click the button to go the MetaMask website, where you can download the chrome extension needed to buy or sell tweets with Ethereum cryptocurrency.
Step 5: Search for your favorite tweet on Twitter, then copy and paste that tweet url on the browse page. It will pull up the bidding page.
Not sure where the tweet url is? Click on the “time” of the tweet, then copy the url of the page that opens up. It will look something like this: https://twitter.com/drmicheleross/status/243056532332376064
Ok, so this tweet might not make 2.5 million dollars, like Twitter founder Jack Dorsey’s first tweet from 2006.
Step 6: Browse the tweets that got offers or sales on v.cent.co. Some are delightfully old school.
How valuable will NFTs, and particularly NFT tweets be in the future? Like any collectible, and now crypto item, it’s unclear. But considering the interest in fans buying a piece of their favorite celeb, like Elon Musk or even Soulja Boy, I’m sure the Kardashians will be jumping on soon and this platform will be hot.
The platform lets you resell your NFT tweets too, so if they do go up in value, this could be lucrative for some first adopters. What’s interesting is the tweet creator is still paid even from secondary resales, which is a nice way to support small-time artists, thought leaders, and other creators.
